Chinese Economy: Riots at the Nerf Toy Factory

China Economic Unrest: Riot at the Chinese Nerf Factory

Nerf ball

Workers Demand Pay

Twenty years ago, “Riot at the Chinese Nerf Factory” would have been more likely to be the name of a punk rock CD than a headline about economic news.

China hasn’t been insulated from world economic woes.

From Nerf factory riot in China and Workers riot at Chinese toy factory:

Riots are breaking out in factories in Dongguan as bankruptcies and layoffs throw thousands out of work with wages owing. South China, “the world’s factory,” is in chaos, faltering. After the mid-autumn festival, enormous numbers of workers simply stayed home in the provinces, rather than returning to work in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Dongguan.

Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing: “This AP story talks about a riot in the factory where Nerf toys were manufactured for Hasbro — and no, they didn’t fight with Nerf bats.”

According to AP: “Shipping containers on trucks in the factory’s courtyard were loaded with Hasbro boxes containing Nerf toys.”

One report said the violence was touched off when the owner of the plant, Hong Kong’s Kader Holdings Co. Ltd., began laying off 216 migrant workers–the factory employs 6500. Some 80 senior workers complained that they were shorted on severance pay. These 80 mobilized a mob of 500 friend and unemployed workers.

“The factory’s management and the local officials really look down on the workers,” said one laid-off worker who would only give his surname, Qiao, because he feared criticizing the company might jeopardize his chance of getting any compensation.

Qiao accused the police of igniting the riot. “The workers just got angry because the police hit them first,” said the 30-year-old migrant from the southwestern province of Sichuan, devastated by last May’s monster earthquake.

Basic pay for an assembly-line worker at the factory is 770 yuan ($112) a month, with overtime rare now that most of the Christmas orders have been filled.

Note to all those who believe China is ready to swallow up the USA: China’s got economic problems of its own.

[Unrest by workers] is “a major concern in major industrial zones in Guangdong, which has been hit hard by a series of factors: rising costs of wages and raw materials along with currency fluctuations and the global financial crisis. More than 7,000 companies in Guangdong have gone bust or moved elsewhere in the first nine months of the year, the official China Daily newspaper recently reported.”

One prediction: this will not be the last story readers will see about civil unrest over economic problems in China.

How to form a green team at work

Time Magazine logo (Courtesy of Time.com)

If you’ve ever looked around your office and thought, “we should be recycling that,” you may not be the only one. Consider starting an office green team.

what is a green team?

A green team is a group of employee volunteers who look for ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle in the office. They team up to bring their individual skills and passion into a collective for changing behavior among their peers.

Their efforts not only help the environment, but they can improve the company bottom line. Offices with green teams enjoy the benefits of lower electricity bills, less waste, and engaged employees who build project management, communications, and leadership skills as they plan out their eco-friendly campaigns. It’s a win-win for everyone.

how to start?

Post a notice on your company bulletin board, send an email to all staff members (or just the people you know in your department, if your office is strict about sending emails to the whole company). Ask who is interested in environmental issues and is willing to bring that passion to work in forming a green team.

Iwantoneofthose

Provide an outline of topics to brainstorm such as:

what next?

Set up a meeting. Ask what topics the group is interested in taking on. Designate a leader — someone who will keep a list of the issues that come up in team meetings.

Once you’ve established a set list of projects to pursue, task your leader or another volunteer to find contacts within the company who can be your point-person for requests, such as the facilities manager who needs to sign-off for setting lights on timers or motion detectors and the purchasing agent who approves an order for recycling bins or biodegradable break room supplies.

Ask for project leaders to take on each task on your list and develop a campaign for change. You may also want to appoint a communications person who has skills to create marketing materials and draft proposals to present to senior executives to get them involved. These proposals should not only state why this change would benefit the environment but how it will reduce costs for the company. Most executives are willing to give attention to something that affects their budget.

Since the role of a green team is to increase employee awareness around the impact of personal actions — such as putting something in the recycling bin versus the trash bin — much of your team’s job will be to make this kind of enlightenment interesting, informative, and fun rather than finger-pointing or nagging.

This can be done through campaigns that are creative and positive, showing how current habits impact the environment and how new habits can improve it. Perhaps pick a mascot to be your spokesperson such as a polar bear or other endangered species suffering from the effects of global warming.

Consider fun ways to bring education into the office and pique the interest of all employees. See about bringing in guest speakers or host a movie screening event (”An Inconvenient Truth” is a classic!)

keep in touch

Set a schedule for monthly green team meetings to brainstorm ideas, establish projects, and review the outcome of campaigns. Be sure to offer recognition to project leaders with a round of applause for their efforts.

Remember to be flexible. Employees are adding these new tasks to their existing workloads (out of the goodness of their heart), so it’s important to be understanding if campaign deadlines need to be pushed back.

Put together a distribution email list of members and set up an intranet webpage to post agendas and project progress. An internal website is useful for green team members while inviting potential members and letting other employees review and take note of what’s happening.

And be proud. When we look back in 10 years and someone asks, “Did you know about global warming back then? Did you do something about it?” You can say, “Yes we did!”

Cube Speaker fits in your hand

Wow. This thing is tiny. The Cube Speaker is made by Landport, a Japanese company, and apparently the tiny audio output device can fit within the palm of your hand. So for those that want audio on the go, but want to limit the bulk by as much as possible, this may very well be the way to go.

cube_speaker

The Cube Speaker measures in at 26mm x 26mm (hence the “cube” moniker). It only weighs 16 grams and can work with a ton of devices due to its 3.5mm jack. Its output is a meager 0.8 watts, but what do you expect? This thing is tiny!

With a lithium-ion battery Levaquin online built-in, this speaker can be charged up by means of a USB port. It order to obtain a full charge, you’ll need to leave it plugged in for two hours. From this, you can expect between four to five hours of audio. The Cube Speaker from Landport will be available in December in white, pink and black for $25 in Japan. We don’t know if this cute speaker will be available in other countries yet, but we’ll keep you updated.

‘Shots fired’ near Georgia leader

November 24th, 2008 by chapmanlogic

The Georgian and Polish presidents have accused Russian troops of firing near a motorcade carrying them close to the breakaway republic of South Ossetia.

Both South Ossetian troops and Russian forces in the area denied involvement. No-one was injured in the incident.

President Mikhail Saakashvili and his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski were planning to visit victims of fighting between Georgia and Russia in August.

The area has seen much cross-border gunfire since a ceasefire was agreed.

Georgia has been marking the fifth anniversary of the Rose Revolution that swept Mr Saakashvili to power.

‘Shelling’ denied

A witness travelling with Mr Saakashvili told Reuters news agency that uniformed South Ossetians had fired warning shots after the convoy came within 30m of a checkpoint at the de facto border.

Mr Saakashvili said the incident should serve as a “reminder” to European politicians that Russia was “brazenly violating” an EU-brokered ceasefire between Tbilisi and Moscow.

“Twenty-first Century occupiers, who have no legal, moral or other right to be there and oppress people, are stationed in the heart of Georgia,” he said during a joint press conference with Mr Kaczynski.

Mr Kaczynski said it was not clear if the gunfire was aimed at the motorcade or into the air.

He added that he had travelled to the remote checkpoint because he wanted to see whether Russian troops were in places they should not be according to the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia denied firing on the convoy.

“The claims that Russian servicemen were implicated in the shelling of the cortege do not correspond with reality,” a Russian spokesman was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

Russian state media also reported South Ossetian denials.

“The South Ossetian side has nothing to do with it,” said South Ossetian spokeswoman Irina Gagloyeva told RIA Novosti.

The purpose of the presidential visit was to underline the precarious situation in which many Georgians find themselves three-and-a-half-months after the war, says the BBC’s Tom Esslemont in Tbilisi.

Now President Saakashvili is using the incident as a means to highlight what he says is the need for continued support from the European Union and the United States, our correspondent adds.

Muted celebrations

Mr Saakashvili had earlier called for Georgians to unite against a “dangerous threat” from Russia as they did in the bloodless revolution of November 2003.

Anniversary celebrations this year have been muted after the August conflict with Russia.

Martin scorsese films

The only planned event is a concert at Tbilisi’s ornate opera house, and opposition groups have held rallies calling for Mr Saakashvili’s resignation.

One of Mr Saakashvili’s former allies, Nino Burjanadze, has used the anniversary to launch a new opposition party, accusing the president of authoritarianism.

On 7 August, Georgia tried to retake South Ossetia by force after a series of lower-level clashes with Russian-backed rebels.

Russia launched a counter-attack and the Georgian troops were ejected from both South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a second breakaway region, days later.

i had always heard of 1988’s mac and me in the most vague whispers of infamy, and so i always knew that i’d later get around to seeing it, being such an avid fan of train-wrecks and all. however, bar it to one paul rudd to show me the single scene that would jet this puppy upper to the top of my netflix queue. he did, so i did, and now it’s behind me.or is it? surely, some of you have also seen this jovial e.t. con-off, in which a young boy (not played by henry thomas) cares as regards an foreign creature — separated from its extraction, natch — with a Freulein his age who believes maiden (not played by drew barrymore), a skeptical older brother (not robert macnaughton), and an oblivious mother (not dee wallace), feeding it junk sustenance (skittles instead of reese’s pieces, etc.) as faceless government agents (not led by peter coyote) close in.oh, and there’s a cameo by no one other than ronald mcdonald himself.so, readers: i beg/plead/implore you to crack up your fondest memories of this film and share them with the have a zizz of us. it’s been twenty years; it’s time to move on. for the stay of you, check out these clips…
