“I tested positive, but Tom Boonen has absolutely nothing to do with it.”
-Cyclocrosser Tom Vannopen, disputing reports that after his positive test for cocaine in January that he named Boonen as his dealer.
Vannopen’s denial would be more convincing had his pal Boonen not tested positive for the same thing, on May 25.
Tornado Tom, Tommeke, Boom-Boom Boonen apparently has an affinity for a drug with as many nicknames as he’s got. There are several interesting things about the news, though.
-Boonen likely won’t be suspended, although he’s been uninvited from Quick Step’s Tour of Switzerland squad. Probably for the best. All those mountains, you know. Cocaine is illegal for in-competition use since it’s a stimulant. But it’s so fast-acting (and clearing, which is the addictive quality that apparently makes Belgian bike racers crave for it nightly) that it’s not illegal out-of-competition, and that’s where Boonen was caught. -We also learned that Boonen has twice been ticketed in the last six weeks for some serious leadfoot, including most recently doing 180kph in a 90kph zone (that’s 108 miles an hour in a 55, for those of you who don’t want to run the conversion in your head). Best part: in 2006 Boonen was the celebrity face on safe-driving PSAs from the Belgian traffic authority. -He might, however, face criminal charges for the coke bust.
Neither Boonen nor Quick Step has responded publicly to the news yet, and Bouygues Telecom, the French team that’s reportedly in negotiations with Boonen for a 2009 contract, also remains mum (not surprising since such discussions are usually unofficial as a rider is under contract for a full calendar year).
But I wonder if this isn’t just the next stage of a retro wave in doping. First we had the return to the halcyon days of transfusions and blood doping. Now it’s cocaine. I’ll give even odds the next positive test is for that old six-days staple, strychnine.
A Welcome Shift Astute observers of the pro cycling scene will note that of the sport’s headliner teams, the only two without title sponsors are also ? coincidentally ? running independent medical monitoring programs. A third, CSC, is losing its longtime sponsor at the end of 2008.
So it’s a relief for the sport that CSC, at any rate, will continue on. An online investment bank, Saxo Bank, will be a co-sponsor of the team for the 2008 Tour de France, and become title sponsor in 2009. CSC had been the team’s sponsor since 2001, after Riis essentially took over what had been known as the small Memory Card-Jack and Jones squad in 2000. Under Riis’ leadership, CSC transformed into one of the most powerful teams in recent history and one much admired for its attacking style, popular riders like Stuart O’Grady and Jens Voight and esprit des corps.
There’s a lot of angst in the racing community about whether an admitted doper like Riis can really play a sincere part in reforming the sport, particularly since two high-profile former riders ? Tyler Hamilton and Ivan Basso ? eventually got busted for doping after they left the team. But the sport is chock full of people with many skeletons in their closets and if we wanted a truly clean start, well, there’d be nobody left. So far, I haven’t seen much to indicate that Riis is not invested in clean sports ? CSC’s monitoring program is run by Rasmus Damsgaard, a highly regarded anti-doping researcher.
